Ask Dr. Oz: Sinus Congestion

Posted:

Audience member Denise tells Dr. Oz that in August she usually gets a lot of sinus congestion. Denise asks Dr. Oz if there is any way to prevent or ease this congestion when it happens.

Dr. Oz responds that a lot of sinus problems arise because we do not wash our sinuses. Dr. Oz likens washing our sinuses to brushing our teeth, and encourages Denise to use a neti pot to wash out the areas around the sinuses to help them drain better.

Dr. Oz notes that in August, certain pollens can really clog one’s nose, and the body’s reaction of producing thicker mucus tends to block the lines that allow the sinuses to drain. Dr. Oz further explains that mold sometimes gets into air conditioning systems, which can be a problem during the hotter months like August.

Denise also asks Dr. Oz about charcoal nose filters, to which Dr. Oz notes that he hasn’t seen them, but that he will look it up.
