Newly Renovated DPS Schools Greet Returning Students
"It was dirty... and it was not the best," said one female Denby High School student.
That's how many described the condition of Denby and plenty of other DPS schools - last year.
But that was before major renovations began at several existing schools. The district will also be adding a new facility for the start of the 2012 school year.
"New schools - or totally renovated - these kids deserve it," said DPS Emergency Financial Manager Roy Roberts. "They deserve to see that we care about them, and this community has really stood up and said to them - we care about you, you're special."
Denby is one of nine schools that will be heavily renovated this fall. Another brand new school will also open. The upgrades and additions are meant to boost morale, as well as improve the quality of education in the district.
Roberts got his first look at the beginning stages of Denby's renovations Friday. Parents also attended the tour.
"For her to walk into a clean system (is great)," said Joyce Parrott, a Denby High parent. "And (it's important) for the office to be accessible to me - because I'm a very interested parent in what's going on with the school and the activities."
