Writer-director Tony Gilroy on how 'The Bourne Legacy' came to be

Posted: Updated:

He's the writer behind the first three Bourne movies that starred Matt Damon.  Now Tony Gilroy has not only written the script, he came up with the story and is the director behind the latest film in the franchise.

Gilroy says he was brought in by the studio.  They were trying to revive a dead production.  So, did he think Damon could get back in the mix at that point?

"By the time they came back to me, they had already all walked away.  Everybody was gone," he said.  "That was not an option."

What brought Damon back?  Recently he said he would do another.

"I've been hearing about this secondhand and third hand.  I don't know anything about that."

How does it make Gilroy feel knowing it's a possibility?

"I really don't know.  We just finished last Friday.  It's been such an effort to do this.  I get all these questions about it.  I don't really know what to say.  I don't have the perspective on it.  I guess in September we'll figure out what we did, and I can figure out what I want to be when I grow up."

If fans wondered what Bourne would grow up to be with Jeremy Renner in the lead character of Aaron Cross for "The Bourne Legacy," a movie that is integrated with the plot of the past and yet very different.

When did Gilroy know that he was going to make the fourth one?

"The first three were wrapped up so tightly, such a perfect little package.  I think a lot of smart people spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to continue.  I was in part of those conversations.  The trail went cold and sort of everybody sort of stepped back for awhile, and I think they were talking to a bunch of different people and said if you can think of any way to make it go forward," he said.  "I came up with just the beginning, the sort of seed of it was to sort of say what if what you were seeing before was only a small piece of something that was much larger and there was a much larger conspiracy outside this."

Is this three movies deep with Renner?  Did he think that or was he just worried about this one movie right now?

"Just this one movie right now.  We didn't want to go for something cheesy.  I've seen some movies recently were they're sort of almost asking you for another twelve bucks on the way out the door.  You don't want to do that, but we left ourselves in a really nice place for a lot of possibilities.  There's many ways to go forward in this."

What does he say to fans to get them in the seats?

"I think we're true to everything that's happened.  I think anyone who's enjoyed the films before, who's been a student of the films before, who loves them, I'm really willing to bet they're going to be very proud of what we've done here."

"The Bourne Legacy" is rated PG-13.
