Matthew Scheidt: Physician assistant impostor`s sentencing today

Physician assistant impostor to be sentenced today

Posted: Updated:

Matthew Scheidt, an Osceola County 18-year-old who posed as a physician assistant and worked for days in a local hospital emergency department, will appear in court this afternoon to learn his sentence.

Scheidt was found guilty in late August of impersonating a physician's assistant and practicing medicine without a license.

Prosecutors said in late 2011, Scheidt talked and impersonated his way into the Osceola County Regional Medical Center emergency department and worked there for days. During that time, he helped restrain a mental patient and administered CPR on another patient.

Scheidt claimed his innocence throughout the trial. His lawyer blamed hospital administrators for issuing him a badge meant for physician assistants without conducting a background check or vetting his credentials.

The day he was convicted by the six-member jury, both his parents could not explain why their son committed this act.

Scheidt's sentencing hearing begins at 3 p.m. today at the Osceola County Courthouse.
