Teen who shot self in face at Orange City library dies
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
A 16-year-old boy who shot himself in the eye with a gun at the Orange City library on Thursday has died.
Witnesses said Yaredh Gautier was showing off a .38 Special to friends when the gun discharged. The bullet struck him in the face. No one else was injured and police believe it was an accident. Gautier was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach where his conditioned worsened overnight.
Detectives aren't sure if the University High School freshman had possession of the gun while he was at school, earlier in the day. School officials had counselors and psychologists on hand Friday for students. The school is conducting its own investigation into whether the boy brought the gun to school.
Police said the gun was reported stolen out of Deltona in 2000. They are still trying to dig up information as to how it got into the hands of a teenager.
Gautier and his mother moved to Orange City two years ago from Massachusetts. His family and friends said he was in the ROTC with plans of joining the Army when he graduated high school.
