VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Kaj Eckerdt is a 14 year old Boy Scout who is shy and modest. He has raised more than $2,000 through community donations, and even mowed some lawns, to help get materials to build nearly a dozen obstacle course pieces for the Volusia County Sheriff's K9 unit.
"I like dogs, I thought it would be good to do something for the K9 unit, so that's what I did," Kaj said.
His big heart and hard work are getting the attention of Volusia's Sheriff Ben Johnson in a big way. "Kaj has taken this work and done a fantastic job," said Johnson. "That's something I can't say enough about."
Eckerdt is trying to earn Eagle Scout honors, the most prestigious award a Boy Scout can achieve. He spent more than 500 hours designing, building and painting a new obstacle course for the dogs. He said he is not only walking away with much more than a good shot at a new title, but also a dream for a career as a Volusia County Sheriff's deputy.
Eckerdt said, "I thought it was pretty cool to see them using stuff that I built with all my friends."
