Retailers aren't the only ones hoping to cash in this holiday season. Charities are also hoping people will open their wallets and give.
The Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign got a welcome boost on Monday when a mysterious donor dropped $1,000 in a kettle at the Roseville Byerly's. They are striving to raise $9.8 million this year.
It's the third time this season that the so-called "Saint Grand" has struck with generosity -- with two more drops made at a Cub Foods in St. Anthony.
"Ten crisp $100 bills folded together and put in a kettle," confirmed Annette Bauer, of the Salvation Army.
Last year, a total of $23,000 was donated in the same way, although Salvation Army officials suspect there may have been a few copy-cats.
"There's someone out there, we believe, doing the same type of thing with bundles of 20s," Bauer said. "In fact, there was another found -- 16 $20 bills."
Yet, while the sounds of the bell ringers are enmeshed in the season of giving, they're not the only ones seeking donations. The United Way is one of more than 4,000 non-profits nationwide who hope to benefit from "Giving Tuesday."
"Just like Black Friday was the kick off to the holiday shopping season, I love that Giving Tuesday is the kick off to the giving season," said Kathy Hollenhorst, of the United Way.
Unlike Give to the Max -- which raised more than $16 million through online donations two weeks ago, donors are encouraged to support the charity of their choice in any way they can.
Kids Connection in St. Louis Park is the largest supportive housing agency in the state, nourishing the bodies and minds of at-risk kids through after-school programs. It's just one of several programs supported by donations made to the United Way.
