NRA's School Safety Proposal Gets Mixed Reviews in Philly

PHILADELPHIA -

Fury on both sides of the gun control debate following the Newtown CT massacre escalated Friday as the National Rifle Association dismissed calls for more gun regulations.

Instead CEO Wayne LaPierre called on Congress to back a plan placing armed police officers in every school in America.

That idea is drawing mixed reaction across Philadelphia.

"I don't see how making schools into prisons are going to make the children feel safe," said Efi Green as she walked through Center City Friday night.

"I just think that it's a dangerous situation.  A gun can get away from anybody, even a police officer," she said.

Others like Angela Reyes support the recommendation.

"They need more cops around," she said.

"Nowadays anybody can just say that they're a student or whatever or they work for the school.  They could just walk in there and God knows what happens."

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter also weighed in.  He condemned the NRA for claiming gun laws don't work and called their proposal for armed cops in schools "the equivalent of an arms race."

Nutter's comments gained attention outside of Philadelphia given his role as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Thursday weather looks damp and stormy.  It will be mild and muggy to start with spotty showers early followed by afternoon and evening storms.  Highs in the upper 70s with winds out of the SW 5-10 mph. Some of the storms will produce locally heavy rain and gusty winds.

This system is from the same cold front that caused the midwest tornadoes. It will also usher in cooler air for the holiday weekend.
