TITUSVILLE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Twenty dogs from Miami that were on "death row" arrived in Titusville on Wednesday, where they will all get a second chance at life.
The dogs, some of which are being treated for mange and kennel cough, were taken in at the SPCA of North Brevard County.
Financial hardship and a low spay and neuter rates have contributed to a large overpopulation of unwanted pets in Miami, according to officials at SPCA. Thanks to the non-profit animal transportation service, called Dogs on the Move, these 20 pups were driven up the coast, where there is a high adoption rate for smaller dogs.
"There are a lot of 'snow birds' who want small dogs, or lap dogs," said one staffer.
The SPCA has saved 200 Miami dogs over the past year which is rewarding work for the staff here.
These dogs will need to be nursed back to full health first, but should be ready to adopt in three weeks.
