'Chessology' teaches kids how to win in life

Posted: Updated:

Chess is one of the oldest strategy games known to man, and one local coach is using it to teach kids how to win something even more important than a match: the game of life.

It may look and sounds like the kids in the "Chessology" program are playing games, but they're actually learning some very complicated concepts.  The curriculum was developed by their coach, Ian Atkins, but the lessons aren't just about capturing kings and pawns.  Coach Atkins' methods are as calculating as the game itself.

"In anything you do in the course of your day, you're calculating multiple variables," said Atkins.  "So chess is just a very literal translation.  It's the language that we speak when we're teaching children how to go about decisions."

The kids say you have to think ahead, and remember how what you're doing will affect the rest of the game.  You also have to know your math.  Learning algebra is a huge part of the learning curve, but the kids-- some of whom are as young as the first grade-- are mastering math.  They're also conquering good decision-making, and learning about life.

Coach Atkins has recently created something called Chess Tube, which is like a virtual chess lesson where the students can learn and play chess online.

For decades, Atlantans have woken up to Tom Sullivan on their radios.  But you might not know that he's also somewhat of an expert eBay seller, and he's got quite a story to tell.

They say the third time's a charm, and that's certainly the case for Candice Glover.  A third try on American Idol was just what she needed, and on Thursday night she was crowned the season 12 champ.
