CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A northwest suburban police officer got a surprise Wednesday when he went home for a lunch break and found a 21-year-old neighbor burglarizing his home.
The Elgin police officer, working the afternoon patrol shift, went to his home in the 500 block of Redtail Ridge in Elgin about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday for lunch and found a window screen missing and a light on in the second-floor apartment, a release from police said.
The officer, a 17-year veteran, saw someone in a second-floor bedroom window, though no one should have been in the home, police said. The burglar saw the officer and immediately ran out the front door of the condominium building, where he was taken into custody by the officer.
The alleged burglar was identified as Ryan Hukill, 21, who lived on the same block as the officer, the release said. Hukill took a set of the officer's handcuffs from the home, police said.
Officers found evidence in the apartment, including a gun safe that sustained damage indicating someone had tried to pry it open, though no weapons were taken.
Hukill admitted to his involvement in the burglary, according to police. He was charged with one felony count of burglary.
At a bond hearing Thursday morning, he was ordered held at the Kane County Jail on a $75,000 bond. His next court hearing will Jan.. 17 at 9 a.m. in St. Charles.
