VIERA, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
One person is dead after a collision sends a car plunging into a pond in Viera.
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol said the driver of a car traveling south on Stadium Parkway ran through a stop sign, hitting another car traveling westbound on Wickham Road. The driver of the car that was hit lost control and drove into the water.
Witnesses jumped into the pond and pulled the driver and a passenger out of the water.
The driver of the car that was struck, identified as 72-year-old Floyd Phaneuf, sustained minor injuries. The passenger, 79-year-old Joan Phaneuf, Was transported by ground to Viera Hospital where she died from her injuries.
Contesa Gissendanner, 38, of Cocoa, has been identified as the driver of the car than ran through the stop sign. Gissendanner and a passenger received minor injuries in the accident.
Troopers said charges are pending in the crash.
