2013 to be an expensive year for consumers

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

There are a number of items that are going up in price in 2013, and the culprit for some of the price increases is the weather.

It's been too dry, and drought is the number one reason that food prices will go up this year, according to DealNews.com. Animal feed was hard hit by the summer's drought, so there will be as much as a 4 percent increase in dairy and meats. Breads and cereals are going up as much as 3.5 percent. So, you may want to budget accordingly.

Gas prices might be going down, but new fuel efficiency requirements will push new car costs up.

The cost of home theater systems is also going up. The report says you will see "shockingly high price tags in 2013." The reason: New systems will have premium features like high pixel density and you will have to pay for that.

The cost of smartphones has apparently been subsidized by service providers. Because of that, you got lower priced phones for long-term contracts. In 2013, some carriers are stopping that practice, and phones prices will go up.

Also going up in 2013 -- college tuition, healthcare costs, and starting on Monday, shipping costs through FedEx and UPS could jump up 4.9 percent.

Beer prices might go up too because copper prices are expected to rise. Copper is used in beer making, water pipes, pots and pans and you will see that cost passed along to the consumer.
