CDC: Severe flu season in dozens of states

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Most patients in the waiting room of a CityMD urgent care facility Monday night were there with flu-like symptoms.

The CDC reports that 41 states have widespread influenza activity. Of those, 29 -- including New York and New Jersey -- have high flu numbers. Flu-related child and infant deaths climbed to 18.

So the question is what's driving numbers up? One doctor said it could be a combination of factors of people not getting immunized, underlying medical conditions, and the possibility that the strain of this season's flu shot not being as efficient as it should be.

The CDC said it seems the flu strain making the rounds this season, influenza A or H3N2, accounts for about 76 percent of the viruses reported. Typically seasons with influenza A have been more severe.

The New York City Health Department is monitoring influenza activity in the city and continues to urge New Yorkers to get a flu shot. Health officials said flu activity in the city is increasing.
