ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Several mayors of municipalities in Orange County are banding together for better school security. The Council of Mayors met Friday morning with city police chiefs and representatives from the Sheriff's Office to discuss options.
Some of the conclusions are simple. Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn wants continued communication among police chiefs, to prevent a Sandy Hook-type incident in Orange County.
"Everyone of our chiefs are communicating. They are working together," he said.
All the mayors also agree that they want armed police officers on school campuses, and not security guards with guns.
"We have anyone walking around our schools with a gun, we better know the caliber of that person, and that comes from sworn law enforcement," said Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, who was also in attendance.
Both Bruhn and Jacobs are calling for an organized commission, dedicated to security for all county schools; however, the Orange School Board has indicated that such a commission is not necessary.
The Council of Mayors hope to come up with a unified plan, backed by the public schools, in the coming months.
