OCALA, Fla. (WOGX FOX 51) -
A toddler was hit and killed in a freak accident in Marion County. It happened Saturday morning around 11 a.m. at a home at 730 NW 15th Avenue in Ocala.
Ocala police told FOX 35 that Shenneka Lofton, the driver of a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix went to visit a relative that morning and when she went to leave the home she got into her car, and there were kids playing in the yard.
Detectives said that Shenneka thought it was clear behind her, so she backed out of the driveway, but a 1-year old child by the name of Samaya Bradford was still in the driveway and Lofton didn't know, so she backed over her.
Ocala Police said Lofton picked the child up and took her into the home, however, right after, police say Lofton left the scene. She returned a short time later and was taken into custody.
The child was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center, but was pronounced dead there. Little Samaya received severe head injuries.
Lofton was arrested for leaving the scene with a fatality and for driving without a drivers license.
