Parents offer input on Seminole County rezoning plans
SANFORD, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Parents met with school leaders in Seminole County on Monday evening to help narrow down the plans for school district rezoning in the northern part of the county.
The following schools are included in what is called the "North Phase" of the rezoning: Bentley, Crystal Lake, Heathrow, Highlands, Idyllwilde, Lake Mary, Layer, Wicklow, Wilson, Winter Springs, Woodlands.
Participants combed through 13 different plans, marking their top four choices with green dots, weeding out the ones posing the most problems.
"I think in the end the superintendent's going to look at all the plans and he's going to say do they really make sense," said parent Dan Houg.
It was a tedious process, with transportation issues dominating the number of problems raised in each plan. For instance, some plans required students to be bused miles away from their home. these parents have made it clear they want their kids closer to their own neighborhoods.
"They've got a big challenge ahead of them," said parent Chad Kersting. "Everyone in here has got their own interests, and whenever you look at any neighborhood, any neighborhood could be ripped apart."
The major issue for parents is that some plans call for kids living in the same subdivision, and in some cases the same street, to go to different schools.
The four plans which garnered the most support from the committee included:
No. 267 - Rezone Plan No. 748 - Rezone Plan 2 North West No. 756- North Phase Z1 No. 794 - Cluster Keeper
