The Cook County Board is considering an ordinance that would require gun owners to report stolen or lost firearms.
Board President Toni Preckwinkle introduced the measure Wednesday. It would require anyone who loses, destroys, transfers or has their firearm stolen in Cook County to report it to the sheriff's office within 48 hours.
Anyone who fails to do so could be fined $1,000 for the first violation.
In a statement, Preckwinkle says guns that were purchased legally too often end up in the hands of criminals. She says the ordinance will help law enforcement crack down on people who don't file police reports yet claim their guns were lost or stolen after the weapons are recovered from a crime scene.
