GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -
Gwinnett County police say a 17-year-old was struck and killed by a vehicle early Wednesday morning while trying to cross Lawrenceville Highway.
Police say Dakota Waters was crossing the highway between Hamilton Road and James Road at around 7:30 a.m. They say Waters was standing in a center turn lane outside a crosswalk when Waters was hit by a black 2007 Land Rover as it was attempting to make a left turn onto James Road.
They say the driver, 49-year-old Sharon Mitchell-Golden, was unable to stop her vehicle before striking Waters.
Waters was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center, and later died of his injuries.
Golden has been charged with a turn lane violation and second degree vehicular homicide.
Police say the wet weather conditions may have contributed to the accident. They say speed and alcohol are not considered contributing factors.
