PHILADELPHIA -

Thousands of volunteers were expected to participate in this year's Greater Philadelphia King Day of Service.

This year's event included workshops, volunteer projects, and presentations at Girard College, which served as the host for the region's signature project.

Organizers say the signature project highlighted the Philadelphia Housing Authority's Free Netbook Program, which included the distribution of netbook computers, modems and resources to more than 150 housing authority residents.

The residents also were trained on how to conduct online job searches and fill out online applications.

Organizers say the King Day of Service celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy by transforming the national holiday into a day of citizen action.
