Police in Hapeville say a man was shot and killed during an attempted robbery late on Tuesday night.
According to police, 62-year-old Stewart Walton and his wife Lydia were approached by two armed men as they walked along Dorsey Road at around 9:30 p.m. They say during the attempted robbery both of them tried to run away, but Walton was shot and killed by the gunmen as he attempted to flee. His wife was not injured.
Stewart Walton, who served in the U.S. Army, ran from house to house in search of help, but could not find any.
Lydia Walton ran into her home and locked the door.
The two gunmen took Stewart Walton's wallet and other belongings and then left, possibly in a white compact car.
A next door neighbor of the victim said she felt bad about what happened.
"I feel bad that we weren't here to help, and to see the trail of blood and him trying to actually get into the house, and cry for help and the blood is on my bricks and window. And we weren't here. I feel bad," said the neighbor.
She says the couple had only been living in their home for about 30 days, and didn't know them that well.
Police say they have some leads in the case and are searching for the gunmen.
