Two Chicago-area brothers have pleaded guilty to defrauding the state of Illinois of more than $5 million in unpaid sales tax.
Attorney General Lisa Madigan and the Illinois Department of Revenue announced the pleas by accountants Naveed Ahmed and Asif Waheed on Friday. The two pleaded guilty to wire fraud, mail fraud and preparing fraudulent tax returns. They were sentenced to two years of probation.
Authorities say they filed the returns on behalf of 8 gas station owners in Chicago, Cicero, Homewood and Joliet.
The scheme lasted from December 2007 through February 2009. Ahmed owns the Arlington Heights accounting firm Midwest Financial Services. His brother works for him. The brothers were arrested and indicted in 2011.
