ATLANTA -
Police are investigating a deadly accident that happened Sunday night on Interstate 285 in southwest Atlanta.
A spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department says that around 9 p.m. Sunday, a four-door sedan traveling southbound on Interstate 285 lost control and went into a guardrail just south of Campbellton Road. The driver of the car then tried to swerve back into traffic and struck a pickup truck causing the sedan to catch fire.
The driver of the sedan died at the scene. His passenger was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The driver of the pickup truck was also transported to the hospital, but in stable condition.
A tractor trailer driver lost control of his rig while trying to avoid the accident. It ended up in the ditch. The driver was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
Traffic on the outer loop of the Perimeter was shut down at Campbellton Road for about three hours. Police detoured traffic off at the exit. They also worked to turn around the vehicles past the exit and get them safely off the interstate.
No charges have been filed, but the investigation continues.
