Patrick Fitzgerald has prosecuted reputed mobsters, terrorists and Illinois governors.
Thursday night, the former top prosecutor gets a crack at Socrates. Yes, that Socrates, the Greek philosopher.
He'll defend the city of Athens in a retrial that serves as a fundraiser for Chicago's National Hellenic Museum. Athens executed Socrates in 399 B.C. for corrupting its youth and disrespecting its gods.
The former U.S. Attorney told The Associated Press in a phone interview hours before the event that a last minute plea deal didn't appear likely. He complains that Socrates is "not much of a compromiser."
Socrates' lawyer - high-powered defense attorney Dan Webb - is no slouch, either.
Fitzgerald says he and Webb won't be wearing togas from the period. Fitzgerald says that would constitute "crimes against nature."
