Students returned to classes Monday at Neshaminy High School, but their minds weren't just on school work, they were on 16-year-old Matt Cruz, a sophomore, who was critically injured in a terrifying bus crash outside of Boston over the weekend.
"It's just a shame, my hope goes out for the kid," one student said.
Cruz was one of more than 30 people injured when the Calvary Coach bus crashed into a bridge. The bus was carrying students from the Destined for a Dream Program home from Boston after a day trip to Harvard University. Authorities said the bus didn't belong on the road. The bridge clearance was only 10 feet and signs were posted.
"It's more bumps and bruises that type of thing. I think they're all more scared and shocked and upset, being so far away from home," said Teresa Merrigan, the mother of one of the students who was injured.
"I feel real sorry for his family," said student Denny Lord when he heard about Matt Cruz. "I know most of those kids and just real tough hearing about it."
No one answered the door at the address for Calvary Coach Bus Co. in West Philadelphia and no one came to the door at the address listed for bus driver, Samuel J. Jackson, a few blocks away.
Published reports quoted the bus company owner as saying the driver may have been looking at his GPS seconds before the bus hit the bridge. Owner Ray Talmadge did not return our calls.
Massachusetts State Police continue to investigate the crash. The bus company has been cited three times in the past two years for failing to keep proper records.
"It looked like he had to be going pretty fast," Merrigan said after seeing pictures from the crash scene. "It looks like the whole top of the bus was pushed backwards."
State Police are awaiting a final report from the state police accident reconstruction team, interviewing witnesses and the victims. Investigators would not comment on reports that the driver may have been looking at his GPS unit when the crash occurred.
The full investigation could take weeks.
No citations or charges have been filed at this point against the bus driver or the bus company.

It was a gloomy Sunday as the whole area remain socked in with low clouds & fog, drizzle and scattered showers.
The weather remains unsettled through most of the work week. The difference is that it will really warm up -- temperatures soar into the 80s by Tuesday. That mild and humid air mass will fuel afternoon thunderstorms.
By Thursday a cold front moves by bringing more rain. It will also bring drier and cooler weather by Friday as we finally clear out.
