APOPKA, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
It was a happy ending after a mother was reunited with her 15-month-old son who was found wandering the streets in Apopka Monday afternoon. Someone had called the police after they found the toddler in bushes near the entrance of Lake Pleasant Cove, off of Apopka Blvd.
"He was very cold, wearing a onesie. They collected him and brought him to safety. Then, they were getting calls about a traffic crash that happened," said Ofc. Edwin Chittenden with the Apopka Police Department.
Apparently, the toddler was with a man who whose body was found a short while later in a nearby lake.
"They approached the lake. They found a guy in the middle of the lake, swimming around. They called for him. 'Come to us! Come to us!'" said Chittenden. "He turned away from them, and then went under water."
Police said the man drowned, adding that it is still unclear if hypothermia played a role. They said the man, whose identity has not been released, lived with the child's mother but may not be the boy's father.
The investigation is ongoing.
