NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Thousands of striking school bus drivers and supporters held a "Unity March and Rally" Sunday afternoon one day before the city opens bidding for new contracts.

Members of Local 1181 of the Amalgamated Transit Union began the march at Cadman Plaza Park in Brooklyn, over the Brooklyn Bridge to City Hall Park where they rallied near City Hall demanding job security.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the city it is not required to guarantee jobs.

Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott say the city must pick the most competitive bus company to cut the cost of driving about 150,000 students to school.  The city says the cost of busing students has increased from $100 million in 1979 to $1.1 billion.
