ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia education officials could hold closed-door talks about troubled local school boards under legislation given initial approval by House lawmakers.
The House voted 151-15 on Monday to approve legislation from Republican Rep. Tom Dickson. It would authorize the state Board of Education to deliberate privately when considering whether to remove members of local school boards.
Any testimony and votes by the state board would still happen in public.
The state board can recommend that Gov. Nathan Deal remove local school board members and appoint replacements when school districts are on the verge of losing accreditation.
House lawmakers adopted the bill with little debate. It now heads to the state Senate.
