An elderly woman was pinned under her car after police said her husband accidentally ran over her in Orange City on Tuesday afternoon.Orange City Fire Chief Chris Johnson said it all happened at the VCA Orange City Animal Hospital on South Volusia Avenue around 1:30 p.m., as the couple was leaving their veterinarian's office. The couple's names have not yet been released, but police said the husband went to get their car and attempted to back in near the door so his wife wouldn't have to walk to the vehicle."The elderly gentleman backed over his wife, and when he did, the rear axle pinned her right across her chest," said Orange City Fire Chief Chris Johnson.Investigators said the victim was trapped under the vehicle. "She was talking to us," said Capt. Johnson. "But because of the pressure of the vehicle across her chest she was having some discomfort breathing."Crews worried about the weight of the axle on the victim, especially considering her age."The problem was having to lift the car straight up so you don't put any more pressure on her," said Chief Johnson.Firefighters used lift jacks and air bags to free the woman in about 10 minutes. She was airlifted to Halifax Hospital as a precaution."The husband certainly was distraught," said Chief Johnson. The woman is expected to be okay.
