A fragments from a meteorite crashed down on a town is Russia, injuring over 400 people and not, an asteroid will skim by the Earth today.
Whoa - what is going on? the man with the answers is here! Check out what astronomer and really smart guy Derrick Pitts has to say about these uncommon events.
1,000 Injured When Meteorite Falls To Earth In RussiaMore>>
A 10-ton meteor fragment fell to Earth in the Russia mountains overnight, sparking dozens of explosions and injuring nearly 1,000 people, the nation now says.
Check out this video that was taken in an area about 900 miles east of Moscow.
Falling chunks of the meteorite caused blasts that led to the injuries, mostly due to broken, falling glass.
Scientists say this meteor is not connected to an asteroid that is expected to make a pass by Earth today.
"It's on an orbit which is similar to Earth's orbit round the sun and so every so often it comes particularly close to the earth," Andrew Jacob, Ph.D., assistant curator of Astronomy at Sydney Observatory. This time round it's passing extremely close to the earth, within about 27000 km of the surface of the earth.''
Scientists say this asteroid poses no risk to Earth.
The Franklin Institute's chief astronomer, Derrick Pitts, joined "Good Day" on Friday morning to answer questions about these incidents. Click here to watch that interview.

It feels like summer out there. We're expecting milder temperatures than yesterday: highs in the mid 80s. Just like summer, it'll be humid, with a chance of a few spotty showers during the day.
This pattern stays in place until Thursday, when strong thunderstorms usher in cooler air for the holiday weekend.
