  • The confrontation underscores the feisty ground campaign being mounted on both sides - but also the increasing difficulty that Arpaio critics face in getting enough signatures to put a recall before voters.
Volunteers set up a table outside a music festival one day last month to gather signatures for a drive to oust the notoriously polarizing sheriff of metropolitan Phoenix. The venue, with its largely liberal crowd, seemed the perfect place to drum up support.
PHOENIX -

The animated kids movie "Escape from Planet Earth" comes out this weekend. George Lopez voices one of the aliens.

George Lopez made local headlines a few months back for going after Sheriff Joe during a standup routine.

We interviewed Lopez about his new movie today, but he couldn't resist throwing some barbs at America's toughest sheriff.

Sheriff Joe took the jabs in stride, and invited Lopez to the valley to join a comedy show to benefit his jail's MASH unit. Lopez never responded to the invite.

But today, while chatting with FOX 10's Rick and Andrea -- he couldn't resist going after the sheriff once again.

"You mentioned it right, you said aliens who want to leave earth, and what better validation than having Sheriff Joe call it the ‘feel good movie' of the year?" said Lopez.

"He makes the aliens wear black and white and pink jumpsuits… eat baloney sandwiches in the hot sun."

We caught up with Sheriff Joe this afternoon.

"We did publicize pink underwear and all that, I should pay him for free publicity," says Arpaio.

He was thankful that this time Lopez was able to keep it clean.

"He blistered me what, 3, 4 minutes on national TV that keeps replaying, called me every name in the book," said Arpaio. "I'm glad he had enough courtesy for Channel 10, that he was very civil."

He also wants Lopez to know his invitation to visit with the sheriff still stands.

"I'll take him on a tour."

Sheriff Joe also says Lopez is more than welcome to help raise money for his MASH unit, which cares for abused and neglected animals.
