Critics in court to seek delay of soda ban

NEW YORK (AP) -- A judge isn't saying how soon he'll decide whether to delay enforcement of New York City's first-of-its-kind effort to limit the size of sugary drinks.

The American Beverage Association and other groups faced off with city officials Wednesday in a Manhattan courtroom. The hearing ended without an immediate ruling.

The city Board of Health agreed in September to bar restaurants, delis and some other eateries from selling sugary drinks in cups or containers bigger than 16 ounces. The rule is set to take effect March 12.

The city says it's a groundbreaking effort to fight obesity.

Opponents say it's an unfair burden on businesses. They say they shouldn't have to comply until a lawsuit over the matter is resolved.
