Police have made an arrest in the fatal hit-and-run of a postal worker in southwest Atlanta.

Authorities said that Cassandra Head, 53, was struck by a dark-colored SUV while using a crosswalk at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Bakers Ferry Road early Feb. 19.

Head was a veteran postal worker, a mother of five and grandmother of 16, according to her family.

The driver of the SUV did not stop and drove off, police said.

On Tuesday, police arrested 40-year-old Eric Demons. He will be charged with several charges, including homicide by vehicle, duty in accidents involving personal injury or death, failure to yield to pedestrian in crosswalk and driving on suspended license.

Demons has been transported to Fulton County Jail, where he is awaiting his first court appearance, officials said.
