BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. -
A 12-year-old was hit and seriously injured by a vehicle just
moments after stepping off a school bus in Bartow County on Wednesday.
It happened on Euharlee Road near the Price Mobile Home Park. Davvionta
Banks was struck by a minivan after he crossed the street to check the
mail.
"I got up there and he was just laying
there in the road…I thought he was already gone because when they picked him up
and put him on the stretcher, it was like he was not moving," said Daniel
Martin.
The sixth-grader was taken to Children's Healthcare of
Atlanta at Egleston, where he remained in the intensive care unit with severe injuries
on Thursday.
Neighbors said that the speed limit on the
busy road is 45 mph, but drivers tend to go faster. The speeding drivers and the mailboxes on the
opposite side of the highway has been a problem for years, according to
neighbors.
"You're checking your mail and you are also
checking the traffic -- it's dangerous," said James Doyal.
Police said that the accident remains under investigation. So far, the driver
of the minivan is not facing any charges.
