UCF researcher takes aim at lasers targeting pilots

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

If a laser is pointed at the human eye, it can cause temporary blindness and even permanent damage.  If the eye in question belongs to a pilot flying a plane or helicopter, that damage could mean something far worse.

Incidents of people with lasers targeting pilots are growing.  There have even been a few occurrences in Central Florida.

So, University of Central Florida researcher Dr. Jayan Thomas set out to find a way to protect pilots.  The method his team created does just that, using material 100,000 times smaller than a strand of hair, called nanoparticles.

FOX 35's Tom Johnson talked to Thomas about his breakthrough.
