NYC chooses new math, English curriculum options

NEW YORK (AP) -

New York City has chosen new curriculum materials that are supposed to be aligned to rigorous standards being implemented statewide.

The city Department of Education said Thursday that the new curriculum options for kindergarten through eighth grade will prepare students for the Common Core standards.

Forty-five states and the District of Columbia have adopted the Common Core standards. Proponents say the standards will provide a consistent understanding of what students are expected to learn.

The standards are supposed to be implemented by 2014.

New York City is recommending math and English curriculum materials from the New York state Education Department and from publishers Pearson and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Schools will be able to order the materials later this spring and start using them in the fall.
