Female kicker tries out at NFL Regional Scouting Combine

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

A kick at history at the Jets practice facility in New Jersey Sunday because for the first time, a woman tried out for a chance to play in the NFL.

We've seen Danica Patrick successful crossover into the male dominated sport of NASCAR.

Sunday, a New York City woman had her shot at the National Football League. It was a historic tryout that she hopes will open the door for woman into the NFL.

28-year-old Lauren Silberman of Brooklyn played the role of pioneer Sunday. Silberman became the first woman ever to try out for the NFL when she took part in the NFL Regional Scouting Combine in Florham Park.

Her goal – to be an NFL kicker!

"I've always been an athlete. I've always been a gamer and, you know when I had the opportunity to be in the NFL, one of the world's most competitive leagues – I absolutely had to take the chance."

Unfortunately, the tryout didn't go as planned. Silberman tried two kickoffs, the first going only 19 yards and the second about 13 yards. She then asked to see a trainer.

Fox 5 learned she apparently suffered an injury during the week while practicing for the try out. With football being such a violent sport, some think it would be dangerous for a woman to play.

"If it was my daughter, no way, but good for her," said one female fan.

Silberman's attempt to make the NFL may have come up short, but she hopes simply trying out will lead to more opportunities for woman in the NFL.

"I might be the first woman trying out for the NFL but I certainly hope I'm not the last."

Female kickers have tried out for college teams with some actually kicking in a game for the University of New Mexico. Lauren played club soccer at the University of Wisconsin and just recently started kicking long field goals.

Makes you wonder if this was legitimate – or just a publicity stunt by the NFL.
