Yesterday's 9.2" of snow at O'Hare not only ranks as the 4th biggest March calendar day snowfall on record, but the first 6" snow since the Groundhog's Day Blizzard of 2011.
March snowfall is not that uncommon for northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana. In Chicago, the normal March snowfall is 5.6 inches and the seasonal normal is 36.7 inches. So about 15 percent of Chicago's snow falls in March.
In Chicago, there have been 45 snow storms that produced at least 10 inches of snow, since snowfall records began in 1886. Six of them, or 13 percent, were in March. The largest March snowstorm in Chicago history was 19.2 inches on March 25 and 26, 1930. It was the 5th biggest snowstorm in Chicago history.
We have come a long way in a short period of time in terms of adding to our snowfall totals for the season. The total snowfall of this season on January 31st was only 3.5". Since then, it's been a completely different ball game.
February went down as the 16th snowiest on record for Chicago with 16.1" of snow.
So far this March has produced 9.9" of snow. That's the most snowfall in March since 11.2" of snow fell in March of 2002.
The forecast calls for much warmer and wetter weather by the weekend. The 8-14 day outlook (March 14th-20th) calls for below normal temperatures with near normal precipitation.
