Archdiocese Calls For Suburban Seminary To Consolidate

Posted: Updated:
LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, Pa. -

A plan released Thursday by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia calls for the consolidation of the "entire operation" of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Lower Merion Township but does ensure that it will remain at its current location.

Under the plan, the seminary's college division program would move into another location on campus within the next three to five years. As a result, the archdiocese says the seminary would keep 30 of its 75 acres. It's not yet clear what will happen to the college division buildings once the program is relocated.

On its current campus, the seminary occupies 19 buildings.

"Our commitment to providing the best possible program of priestly formation for the benefit of our seminarians and the people they will one day serve is unwavering," Archbishop Charles Chaput said in a statement.

"The plan being announced today (Thursday) will ensure the future viability and sustainability of our seminary now and in the future."

The archdiocese says the consolidation will help to support up to 200 seminarians, all candidates discerning vocations to the permanent diaconate and hundreds of students.
