Tempe couple tells secret to winning lottery twice
A valley couple won the lottery for a second time on March 6. Diane and Kerry Carmichael are now two-time Arizona lottery winners.
They won $2.5 million on "The Pick" back in 1995 and just recently won $1 million playing Powerball.
The retired couple is getting a $125,000 annuity for their 1995 win, which expires in 2014.
"It was exciting because it was my ticket this time. The first time it was his ticket so I got the thrill of saying I won you know. But we always knew we were going to win again, it wasn't if, it was when," says Diane Carmichael.
The Carmichaels will be collecting about $650,000 after taxes this time.
Their secret to winning twice? They buy tickets every week.
"We've played every week since day one," said Kerry Carmichael.
The Carmichaels even have a special budget just for lottery tickets.
"Some people play golf, some people play tennis, we play the lottery," said Kerry Carmichael.
Not only did the couple win twice, both tickets came from the same location, the lottery office.
When asked, the Carmichaels say they consider themselves to be lucky.
"On Mega Millions, Powerball and the other games, we play quick picks...so, it's just the luck of the draw," said Kerry Carmichael.
They also attribute part of their success to their positive attitudes.
"When we won, it wasn't if we were going to win, it was when," said Diane Carmichael.
