Number Of Food Stamp Recipients At Record High

WASHINGTON -

A record number of Americans are now on food stamps.

New data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows a record 47,791,996 people collected food stamps in December 2012.

The USDA also reports that an average of 46,609,072 Americans were on the SNAP Program every month of last year.

Nearly a quarter of Washington, D.C., residents were on food stamps last year, making it one of the most food stamp-dependent cities in the country.

States with the most food stamp recipients in 2012 were Texas, California and Florida.

Sen. Jeff Sessions of the Senate Budget Committee said that the Obama administration is encouraging growth in the food stamps program as a way to stimulate the economy.

"Any of the minor attempts to cut spending here, even entitlement reforms that are going to take effect years out, those are very minor compared to what you would end up with if we don't reform entitlements," David Freddoso, of the Washington Examiner.

This news comes in the same week that the Dow hit an all-time high and unemployment fell to 7.7 percent.

Varying economic indicators are making it difficult to take the true temperature of the U.S. economy, Fox Business' Tracy Byrnes reported.
