Cardinals on Monday held their final day of meetings before the start of Tuesday's conclave.
The conclave is scheduled to begin at 3 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, just before a public mass will be held at the Sistine Chapel.
The first vote from the conclave is expected to come quickly. Even if that vote fails to elect a new pope, it is expected to give the cardinals a good indication of where the others stand.
Tuesday's conclave will be the first to take place in the era of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Many will find out who the new pope is simply by checking their smart phones.
While news lovers may be checking Twitter for the latest on the papal election, plenty of organizations will be posting updates to feed the frenzy.
For Matthew Gambino, director of CatholicPhilly.com, the goal is immediacy.
"As soon as we know a new pope has been elected, we're gonna' blast that out on social media, we're gonna' have it on our website so you can read more details about it," Gambino told FOX 29's Iain Page.
The Catholic church has also embraced social media.
Benedict XVI was the first pope to tweet. For many people, this is the type of connection they want.
