CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
On Tuesday, cardinals from around the globe—including Chicago Cardinal Francis George--will head into the Sistine Chapel to start the super-secret process of electing the next Pope.
In Chicago Monday night, there was a special mass at Holy Name Cathedral.
Parishioners at Holy Name Cathedral heard the message of gratitude coming from Cardinal George as he plays a role in selecting a new pope.
"He wanted to thank you for your prayers especially at this important moment," Cardinal George said to the people.
Chicagoans have their own ideas of what they're looking for in the new head of the Catholic Church.
"Some of the needs within the church from a practical stand point, dealing with the sexual abuse crisis which is pretty much a factor not only American churches, but in other local churches, such as in Europe," says Parishioner Don Cosacchi.
"I think that what we're looking for reconciliation and just a movement towards a new, open and kind of revival of the church," Karen Ross says.
Catholics we spoke with say they want a pope who keeps an open dialogue with other faiths. Some would like the church to be welcoming to the gay and lesbian community. Others feel the new pope needs to ensure the faith will carry on.
"I think Chicagoans and I think all Americans are looking for a pope who can bring the young people back to church," says Parishioner Anthony Farrell.
My fingers are crossed," says Estelle Martin. "I don't want to say what I'm hoping for, but we do want a little change. Someone that's a little different yet strong enough to deal with today's issues."
The cardinals in Rome are already discussing possible names Monday night.
