Ill. Republicans push new laws to deter gang violence

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Illinois Republicans are pushing some new laws to protect children from gang violence.

They're calling it the "protect our children" initiative, which includes a bill to increase penalties for gang-related gun crimes and requires gang members caught with a gun to serve their time in prison without probation.

The package also makes it a felony to try to recruit anyone to join a gang and calls for more money for officials to screen for mental health problems among people trying to buy guns.
