NEWARK, Del. -

Two children could only tell investigators they thought their mother was at work after they were found inside of a Newark home police describe as being in "deplorable condition."

Police say they are now searching for the mother who left the 11-year-old and 10-year-old boys in the home on the 800 block of North Country Club.

According to investigators, the children were found Tuesday night around 7:30 p.m. after officers received reports of a child left home alone.

When officers arrived, the children could only say their mom was at work.

Investigators have since identified the mother as Catherine Allex. Police say Alex now faces two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

Although police aren't certain where Allex is, they do believe she is with two other children; a 9-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy.

The boys have since been taken into assumed emergency custody and the home was later condemned by the City of Newark Building Department.

Police say they've attempted to find Allex but haven't had much luck. She doesn't have a car and has no known family in the area, police said. She does, however, have ties to the Cape May County, New Jersey area.

If you have any information on Alex's whereabouts, you're asked to call the Newark Police Department at 302-366-7110. You can also provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
