Firefighters battle two brush fires in Volusia County

Firefighters from multiple agencies joined forces to battle two brush fires in southern Volusia County Saturday.   The first fire broke out at Maytown Road on the Volusia/Brevard around 12:47 p.m. near the intersection of Maytown Road and I-95.

The fire, kept firefighters on high alert from the start because quickly grew to 100 acres.  And as of right now, the the Florida Forest Service reports that the fire is 20% contained.

The second fire and the worst of the two broke out around 3:53 p.m. on Boy Scout Camp Road in the Osteen/New Smyrna beach area.  Both areas are listed because it's an incorporated part of Volusia County.  

Thirty-seven firefighters responded with 22 fire apparatus, four tractors and a helicopter helped to fight and contain the blaze that was threatening homes.  They were able to protect a dozen homes that were threatened on Swamp Deer Road, which is near Boy Scot Camp Road.

However, a pole barn on Boy Scout Camp Road was destroyed. This fire is estimated at 150 acres and is 50% contained.  Responding agencies include the Florida Forest Service; Volusia County Fire Services; Brevard and Seminole counties; and the cities of DeBary, Deltona, Edgewater, New Smyrna Beach, Orange City and Port Orange.

Both fires are settled down Saturday evening, however as the humidity rises and winds drop, firefighters expect them to pick up again Sunday afternoon.
