TV stolen from children's ministry at downtown Orlando church

The search is on for some bold burglars who allegedly stole a television used for a children's ministry at a downtown Orlando church -- the second time in a week the church has called police.

Now, a pastor and police are asking for your help.

"It's bad enough that people are stealing [from other people], but when you come to the house of God to do it, you take it to another level," Rev. Dr. Mark Crutcher said.

On Friday morning, Crutcher said a Mount Olive AME Church employee noticed that a few doors, including the ones to the children's room and the finance room, were open and damaged.

"She realized that somebody had been in the building," Crutcher said. "So we started doing an inspection. She made calls and stuff, and we discovered that the television in there was missing."

Someone had stolen the television used for the children's ministry. The pastor also said the crook tried to steal petty cash, but there was none on site.

The police report revealed that a suspect smashed the window in a side door to get in. In all, Crutcher said it will take at least $2,300 to replace the television and fix the damage.

"We're out of that money and other money that we have to put into security measures now that we would normally do for ministry," Crutcher said. "And that's the disappointing part about this thing -- that it takes away from resources that we have marked to go toward ministry stuff."

Crutcher said it was the second time his congregation was forced to call police in the past week.

"A lady was coming up to go into service," Crutcher said. "She was out in the parking lot alone, and someone came into the parking lot, stole her purse, robbed her, knocked her down. She spent a couple of days in the hospital trying to recuperate from that situation."

Now, the church is stepping up security. More men will be keeping an eye on the parking lot and entrances, and a few other secrets.

As for the stolen television?

"There may be somebody out there who bought a stolen television that belongs to the house of God."

Crutcher said even if police can't find the thief, the Big Guy Upstairs will handle it.

"I do understand this," Crutcher said. "There's a God who is a reckoning God. He saw everything. Folks sometimes think they get away, but God has a way of bringing things to a balance."
