The suspect for a May 2012 murder has been released. Police are treating the investigation as though this is a fresh case.
DELAWARE COUNTY, Pa. -
A man placed in prison after he was accused of shooting and killing another man in Delaware County is free after the district attorney's office withdrew the charges Wednesday.
Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whalen announced that murder charges against Tahmir Craig in the fatal shooting of Devon Williams were withdrawn.
Williams was shot in May of 2012 in Chester.
Investigators say FBI video analysis and what they called an "exhaustive and thorough investigation into the facts and circumstances" confirmed that Craig was not the shooter. The DA says his office requested the immediate removal of Craig from prison.
Back in May, police say they obtained surveillance video that showed the shooter chase the victim before he was shot to death. Within hours of the shooting, police say they received information that the suspect's name was "Tahmir."
But based on the video analysis, investigators say Craig was not the shooter in the video.
"As prosecutors in the administration of justice, we have an absolute duty to exhaust all resources in our efforts to pursue the truth," Whalen said in a statement.
Investigators ask that anyone with information on the shooting death of Williams call county detectives at 610-891-4711 or Chester Police at 610-447-8431.
