CPS plans to close 54 schools, teachers union and parents outraged: Chat Room

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On Friday's Chat Room, Sun-Times Splash Editor Susanna Negovan and lifestyle consultant Rochelle Trotter discussed the CPS plan to close 54 elementary schools affecting over 30,000 students, in an effort to close a $1 billion deficit.

The ladies discussed outspoken Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis' controversial statements regarding Mayor Rahm Emanuel – who leads the Chicago Public School District – and the plan itself. She says it isn't right. The teachers union is planning a large protest, which they say may incite "massive civil disobedience" for next week.

Ali Burke, whose son attends Trumbull Elementary School, joined the Chat Room to tell her side of the story. She says the school district's formula is wrong, and has strong feelings about Mayor Emanuel being out of town at the time of this huge announcement. She also spoke on how this change will affect her son.

Closing 54 schools in a single bout would make it the largest in U.S. history.
