2 critically wounded in FBI-involved shooting near UIC

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

At least one FBI agent fired shots during a shooting and chase that left two people wounded Monday afternoon near the University of Illinois Chicago.

FOX 32 News has learned that an FBI agent had just picked up his lunch at a Jewel-Osco in the 1200 block of South Ashland Avenue. He was reportedly walking to his car when he allegedly spotted two suspects breaking into a car. When that agent tried to stop the suspects, they jumped into another vehicle and tried to run the FBI agent over.

Sources say that the agent took out his gun and started shooting. Chicago police gave chase and the suspect crashed and abandoned the vehicle near South Paulina and Harrison streets--five blocks away.

Paramedics took two people from the area to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to Fire Media Affairs. No FBI agents were injured, Bochte said.

Chicago Police said at least one of the wounded was a male shot in the hip. Information on the second person shot was not immediately available.

UIC said the suspect was not in custody as of Monday afternoon. He is described as a 40- to 50-year-old black man weighing about 250 pounds. He was apparently bald and wearing a skull cap, black top, jeans and possibly eyeglasses.

A female companion may have been inside the vehicle, and one or both could be injured, UIC said.

An email alert sent to students and staff campus initially said the suspects could be near South Wolcott Avenue and West Polk Street, and advised students and faculty to lock all doors and stay out of public areas. It later announced campus police searched campus buildings and found no sign of the suspects.

The CTA rerouted its No. 7 Harrison buses because of the investigation.
